Homebrewing: the art of home brewing
A peculiar yet fascinating hobby, homebrewing continues to conquer more and more people
Beer brewing has very ancient origins, some artefacts found in Asia date back 5000 years, to the time of the Sumerians. It is therefore one of the oldest and richest beverages in history, stories often linked to rituals and religious cults.
Its production and consumption have spanned centuries, populations and continents, and even today enjoying a cold beer on the couch or under the sun remains a great way to relax.
But what are the ingredients of this world-famous beverage? Basically, beer consists of four ingredients:
- Barley malt: key ingredient that imparts the aromatic notes
- Hops: responsible for the beer's bitter flavour
- Yeast: fundamental for starting the fermentation process and directly responsible for the alcohol content
- Water: element often taken for granted, but very important for the organoleptic qualities of the finished product
However, raw materials alone are not enough, even homebrewing requires some basic tools. Today, kits containing all the main equipment needed to start brewing can be found on the market.
But the equipment that absolutely must not be missing and is essential for successful production is the fermenter.
Fermenter
The fermenter is nothing more than a container in which the right environmental conditions for the development of a certain process are created and maintained.
Obviously, many different types can be found on the market, with different materials, capacities and sizes.
Those made of metal, generally stainless steel, are the best performing and those that offer the best results in terms of both insulation and heat distribution.
Although more expensive, they are certainly a safe investment in the long run since the thermal containment, impenetrability of light, and ease of cleaning will make the fermentation processes more regular and, therefore, optimal for the expression of the organoleptic qualities of the finished product.
Particularly suitable for maintaining a constant temperature inside the container are fermenters made with pillow plates.
This type of plate, also made of stainless steel, is made of two sheets welded together at points and then "inflated" until they are deformed, so as to create a passage section into which the heating fluid or refrigerating gas will flow.
At Metalpress we are also able to print pillow plates. We can produce standard bottoms, conical bottoms or print specials with pillow plate inserts, generally suitable for the entire food industry.
